Rick Owens and Michèle Lamy: The Woman Behind the Darkest Empire in Fashion

There are fashion partnerships in which two people simply work well together. Then there are partnerships that become so intertwined that it is difficult to imagine the work without the relationship. Rick Owens and Michèle Lamy belong to the second category. Owens built one of the most recognizable visual languages in contemporary fashion, a world of elongated limbs, washed leather, raw edges, severe shoulders, trailing trains and colors that seem pulled from ash, dust and smoke. But behind the mythology of Rick Owens stands Lamy, a French lawyer turned restaurateur, designer, performer, producer and cultural provocateur who recognized something in the young pattern cutter before the fashion establishment did. Owens himself has repeatedly acknowledged the scale of her influence. In a 2025 interview published by his own house, he said, “It’s possible that without Michèle Lamy, there would be no Rick Owens.”

That sentence is more revealing than it first appears. Lamy was never simply the woman standing beside the designer. She helped create the environment in which Rick Owens could become Rick Owens.

Michèle Lamy Before Rick Owens

Michèle Lamy was born in France in 1944 and grew up in the Jura region. Her family already had connections to design and craftsmanship. Her grandfather is widely reported to have made accessories for the celebrated French couturier Paul Poiret, linking Lamy to an earlier generation of fashion in which clothing, spectacle and the decorative arts existed much closer together.

But Lamy did not follow an obvious path into fashion.

She studied law and trained as a criminal defense lawyer. At the same time, she developed an intellectual life that ran far beyond the legal profession. Accounts of her early years describe her attending philosophy classes with Gilles Deleuze, sometimes choosing those lectures over the formal demands of her law studies. She also worked as a cabaret dancer and performer.
