Simon Porte Jacquemus: How Grief, Provence, and a Tiny Bag Built a Fashion Empire

There is something almost cinematic about the story of Simon Porte Jacquemus. He grew up in the sun-drenched countryside of Provence, far from the polished ateliers and fashion institutions of Paris. His parents were farmers, his childhood unfolded among fields and village life, and fashion seemed geographically and culturally distant from the world around him.

At 18, Jacquemus left southern France for Paris to study fashion. Only months later, his life changed completely when his mother, Valérie, died in a car accident at the age of 42. The loss forced him to confront how suddenly life could disappear. Instead of continuing along the conventional route through fashion school, he left formal education and began teaching himself through the process of actually making clothes.

In 2009, he founded his own label. He called it Jacquemus, his mother's maiden name.

What followed was not an overnight success story. It was a gradual, intensely personal rise built from limited resources, childhood memories, Mediterranean sensuality, unconventional proportions and an extraordinary instinct for creating images people remembered. Years later, one impossibly tiny handbag would introduce that world to millions.

Early Life in Provence: Where the Jacquemus Aesthetic Began

Simon Porte Jacquemus was born in 1990 in Salon-de-Provence and grew up in nearby Mallemort, surrounded by the agricultural landscape of southern France. His childhood looked nothing like the traditional mythology of a Parisian couturier.

His parents worked as farmers, but creativity was still present in the family. His father played music and wrote poetry, while his mother became one of the most important influences on his imagination. Throughout his career, Jacquemus has repeatedly returned to memories of Valérie, his childhood and the distinctive light and atmosphere of southern France.

That background eventually became one of the foundations of his design language.
